Central Albertans are often unaware of the local issues that impact their communities. Issues like homelessness, mental health, domestic violence, and hunger can easily go ignored, yet take the dedication and commitment of the entire community to help solve them. We need communities to help show their Local Love. But first, we need their attention.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCEWhen there is an abuse of power, someone gets hurt. 1 out of every 4 violent crimes involve family members.
POVERTY
15.4% of local children live in poverty. Their families' face impossible decisions - do you buy food or pay your rent?
EDUCATION INEQUALITY
Not every child has the same opportunity to succeed. 22% of youth do not complete high school by age 18 which significantly limits their future possibilities.
MENTAL HEALTH1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health challenge or addiction each year or more than 10,000 people in Central Alberta and their families.
HOMELESSNESSIn Red Deer, more than 140 people are sleeping rough in local parks; a lucky few may be sleeping in cars, a friend's couch or a local shelter.
SOCIAL ISOLATION
Ongoing loneliness affects our physical and mental health. People can become isolated because of costs associated with activities, being excluded or physical challenges.
HUNGER
1 in 6 Children do not have enough food to eat making it difficult to grow and learn.
UNEMPLOYMENT
While unemployment can affect anyone, low income earners are most vulnerable because they don't have savings.
