“Leadership isn’t just about having a position or title. It’s about how we choose to show up in the lives of others.”

Whether leading in our communities, at work, or within our homes, true leadership is rooted in humility, consistency, and service. It means being willing to listen, to take responsibility, and to care deeply about people, even when it costs us time, comfort, or recognition. In the workplace, it looks like lifting others up, creating space for growth, and modelling integrity under pressure. It’s about being eager to make the people around you better. At home, it’s often the quiet, unseen choices, showing up with patience, love, and grace day after day, that make the biggest impact. And in our communities, leadership is about building trust, uniting people, and leading with empathy rather than ego. Wherever we are, we all have the opportunity to lead and the way we do it can shape lives in ways we may never fully see.

Eric’s faith provides him with strength and a sense of purpose. His wife continually inspires him with her unwavering support. His family motivates him through their steadfast encouragement, and his friends enrich his life with their character and integrity.

Esther Hudson, 29 – Safe Harbour – Team lead

Esther is a Team Lead at Safe Harbour Society, where she supports Red Deer’s most vulnerable residents, those navigating homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges. Her leadership is rooted in empathy, resilience, and lived experience. Having personally overcome addiction, homelessness, and profound personal loss, Esther leads with compassion and a deep belief in the human capacity for transformation.

In her role, Esther provides frontline support and mentorship, walking alongside individuals as they rebuild their lives. She is a pillar in the recovery community, mentoring women in recovery and sharing her story at treatment centers and on podcasts to break stigma and inspire hope. Her work reflects the power of presence, the importance of connection, and the impact of showing up fully for others.

Esther’s leadership philosophy centers on walking beside others, not ahead of them and empowering individuals to recognize their own strength. She believes true leadership is not defined by titles, but by the courage to model hope, integrity, and resilience.

The scars we share become lighthouses for others heading to the same rocks we hit; our struggles, when faced and shared honestly, can guide, heal, and inspire others toward hope, growth, and meaningful change.

She was honoured with the Live Your Dream Award and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in psychology. Esther is inspired by the courage she sees in others, especially those who ask for help and choose healing. Her mission is to be a consistent, caring presence, reminding people that recovery is possible, hope can be restored, and life can be rebuilt.

Esther’s story is a testament to the power of resilience. She is who she is because of the love, support, and belief of her community, and it is that same spirit she strives to bring to others every day. She hopes that anyone who is struggling sees this and knows that they are never too far gone. Recovery is possible. Life can be rebuilt, hope can be restored, and purpose can be found even after immense hardship.

I find fulfillment in staying busy and giving the best to everything I do.

A lifelong sports fan, Graeme draws inspiration from stories of perseverance and heart from athletes. The dedication and persistence of a player like Zach Hyman, who was never the best player growing up, but became a 50-goal scorer through his hard work. The emotion of baseball player John Macdonald, who wasn’t a great hitter, but hit a home run on Father’s Day, a few days after losing his dad. The luck of an emergency backup goalie in hockey is finally getting to achieve his dream of playing an NHL game. These stories inspire him to set goals and dedicate himself to accomplishing them.

With a background in history and multidisciplinary studies and experience as a small business owner, Jacq brings a strategic, informed, and empathetic approach to leadership. Her approach is grounded in empathy, storytelling, and a deep commitment to helping rural people and places thrive.

“Bloom where you are planted.”

Through her role, Jenalee has been instrumental in shaping several impactful initiatives alongside dedicated community partners,  which showcases local makers and artisans; Empowering Minds, a mental wellness program that equips rural residents with First Identifier training; and Build-a-Skill, a youth mentorship project connecting students with local businesses to explore career paths and build confidence. These programs reflect her dedication to designing solutions that meet people where they are, whether they’re new entrepreneurs, seasoned business owners, or youth preparing for the future. Jenalee also collaborates with regional partners to promote tourism, investment, and innovation across Central Alberta.

At her core, she is a mom first. Raising her son in rural Alberta has given her a deeper appreciation for what truly matters in community building. It’s taught her that the work we do isn’t just about numbers or programs, it’s about creating places where kids can grow up knowing they are supported, safe, and surrounded by opportunity.  Being a mom has made her more patient, more creative, and more determined to build a future that feels bright for the next generation. It’s also reminded her that leadership doesn’t always look like big moments; sometimes it’s in the quiet choices we make every day to show up, care deeply, and keep trying to make things better. Whether cheering at the local rink or sharing coffee with friends, she finds inspiration in the everyday resilience and generosity of rural life.

Jonathan Strome, 35, Owner – Taco Monster

Jonathan Strome is passionate about creating spaces where people feel welcome, connected, and inspired. As the owner of Taco Monster, Jonathan has built more than a restaurant—he’s created a gathering place that brings people together over great food and shared experiences. His entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond the kitchen. Jonathan serves as President of the Red Deer Pickleball Club, Chair of the Tourism Red Deer Board, and works as a business consultant specializing in brand development and strategy.

“Leadership is about more than titles it’s about vision and trust.”

He believes real leadership means listening first, putting aside personal priorities, and fighting for the success of others. His approach creates environments where people can contribute, take smart risks, and share in collective achievements. That philosophy has guided his work across business and community initiatives, from growing local tourism to promoting healthy, accessible recreation through pickleball.

Jonathan’s commitment to Central Alberta runs deep. He and his wife live in Red Deer, are active in their church, and give back through charitable projects and partnerships. Whether through Taco Monster’s food truck traveling the region or his volunteer roles, Jonathan is dedicated to building community and strengthening connections.

What inspires him most is generosity—the sacrifices of those who gave for freedom, the support of mentors and family, and the kindness of people who invest in others. Jonathan strives to pay that forward by creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and joyful. His life motto says it all: “I don’t feel entitled to anything, and that makes me grateful for everything.”

At heart, Jonathan is still the 13-year-old kid who loved making people feel welcome. Today, he’s doing that on a bigger scale—bringing people together, building community, and proving that joy and connection can change lives.

Inspired by bold flavours, big energy, and the hustle of fellow small business owners, Kortney and Zakk are building something special. They have made a business and designed a space built for belonging.

“Our inspiration comes from seeing people laugh with friends over a “sammie”, our crew grooving to the morning playlist, and knowing that what we’re building here is bigger than bagels.”

The other small business owners in Red Deer out there hustlin’ and grindin’ also inspire us every day. It’s cool to feel like we’re a part of something special brewing in Capstone.
